“Laylah” Leila Waddell (1880-1932), Crowley’s most famed Scarlet Woman, is a powerful historical figure in magic and Thelema in her own right. Immortalized in The Book of Lies and the Confessions and familiarly addressed by Crowley as Laylah, she was a writer, magician, musician and founding member of the original company of the Rites of Eleusis. She was also, arguably, Crowley’s most powerful muse, inspiring numerous poems.

Although her reputation as a witchcraft historian is poor and she has been roundly criticized by contemporary historians (as well as by many Wiccans and Neopagans), her works became popular bestsellers from the 1940s onwards and were popularly believed to be accurate. Although her thesis of a highly organized universal Pagan cult existing throughout early modern Christian Europe (and particularly the idea of a pan-European, pre-ChristianPagan religion that revolved around the Horned God) remains largely discredited and rejected, her theories have significantly influenced the emergence of Wicca and reconstructionistNeopagan religions during the 20th Century. She was born in Calcutta, India on 13 July 1863, and she attended the University College of London as a student of linguistics and anthropology. As a young woman, she was a pioneering campaigner for women's rights, and her scholarly interests and her willingness to pursue them against the barriers of the day were quite atypical for a Victorian woman, indicating considerable personal strength. She accompanied the renowned Egyptologist Sir William Flinders Petrie on several archaeological excavations in Egypt and Palestine during the late 1890s and was named Assistant Professor of Egyptology at the University College of London in 1924, a post she held until her retirement in 1935. She became a fellow of Britain's Royal Anthropological Institute in 1926, and was voted President of the Folklore Society in 1953 at the age of 90. However, Murray's best known and most controversial legacy was her book, "The Witch-Cult in Western Europe", published in 1921 during a period in which she was unable to find field work in Egypt. It laid out the essential elements of her thesis that there was a common pattern of underground Pagan resistance to the Christian Church across Europe, and that the European witch-hunts and the associated trials had not been the result of superstitious delusion and social pressures, but were an attempt by the Roman Catholic (and later the nascent Protestant) churches to eliminate a rival sect. She also maintained that Pagan beliefs and religions dating from Neolithic times through to the medieval period secretly practised human sacrifice until exposed by the witch hunt around the middle of the 15th Century. The book may well have been influenced by “La Sorcičre” (published in English as “Satanism and Witchcraft”), an 1862 book by Jules Michelet, which, although largely inaccurate, was still notable for being one of the first sympathetic histories of witchcraft. According to Michelet, medieval witchcraft was an act of popular rebellion against the oppression of feudalism and the Roman Catholic Church, taking the form of a secret religion inspired by Paganism and fairy beliefs and organized in the main by women. Margaret Murray's book "The God of the Witches" (first published 1933) (fromhttp://weread.com/book/1595479813/ The+God+of+the+Witches/BOK-15059871-1) Her "The God of the Witches" of 1931, clearly written for a more popular audience than standard academic works, expanded on her claims that the witch cult had worshipped a Horned God whose origins went back to prehistory, and claimed that reports of Satan during the witch trials of the Middle Ages actually represented Pagan gatherings, with their priest wearing a horned helmet to represent their Horned God. In "The Divine King in England" of 1954, she expanded further on her earlier claims there was a secret conspiracy of Pagans among the English nobility, the same English nobility which provided the leading members of the Church. Her theories of secret conspiracies involving early English sovereigns and nobles, and her re-writing of the deaths of Thomas ŕ Becket and Joan of Arc as Pagan martyrdom, however, have not been taken seriously as history even by her staunchest supporters. Critical analysis of Murray's work, mainly published in obscure journals, often failed to influence the reception of her books, and she became popularly regarded as a leading expert on witchcraft, and many found her theories attractive for the stress laid on freedom for women, open sexuality and resistance to Church oppression. Her work strongly influenced Gerald Gardner and later Wiccan pioneers, and the use of terms, concepts and phrases like the “Old Religion”, “coven” (as well as the specification of a thirteen-membercoven), “Esbat”, the “Wheel of the Year” and the “Horned God” are largely influenced by, or derived directly from, Murrayite theory. It is generally agreed today that, although her work did much to alert attention to the previously concealed history of European religion, Murray's ideas (heavily influenced as they were by the ideas of the anthropologist Sir James Frazer in “The Golden Bough”, also largely discredited) extrapolated more than could be supported from her limited sources. Her questionable methodology, poor sourcing, selective quoting from the testimony of accused witches and subjective interpretation or manipulation of evidence in order to conform to her theories have been roundly criticized, and there have even been accusations of deliberate falsification of evidence. Murray died on 13 November 1963 at the age of one hundred.

These days, you can't swing a dead cat without smacking into someone who claims to be a Witch, or at least a Pagan. They'll busy themselves telling you all sorts of stories of rituals at midnight, or this 'authentic' Book of Shadows they obtained from Barns and Noble. These people are confused.

Most people who follow a Pagan path, follow one whose roots are based in Celtic or British legends. The Celts have a very rich tradition, and their religion spread all through northern and western Europe. Druidism and Wicca as it is commonly known to have their roots in this tradition. But when one uses the term "Wicca", it should not be used to apply to all of Pagan-kind. For while, for the most part, all Wiccans are Witches, not all Witches are Wiccan.



Stregheria is a good example. Stregheria, or La Vecchia Religione, the Old Religion, is Italian Witchcraft. The Tradition as it is known today, began in the mid-14th Century with the teachings of Aradia, the Holy Strega. This was based upon a much earlier system of beliefs, dating back to the pre-Etruscian Italians. It is now, as it was then, a worship of the Source of All Things, through the personification of the Goddess and God.

There are many things that are similar between Stregheria and Wicca. Both use Nature in their teachings, though in Stregheria, Nature is the Great Teacher. The rituals are more structured and require more concentration and "digging" than Wicca. There is a deep history based upon Aradia's Teachings, and there is a prophecy given to us in the Mythos, which speaks of the coming Age of Daughter, when Reason will rule. The Stregan view of the Afterlife is different as well. We return to the Realm of Luna as the moon waxes, and return to Earth as She wanes. When we are ready, we pass through the Sun to be made into our new bodies for our return to the Stars.

We have the Grigori, who are the Watchers, and Guardians over our rites. And the Grimas, who keep the traditions pure and continuing. The Lare are the spirits of our ancestors, whom we worship and call upon for aid. Family and tradition play a major role in the lives of the Strega, and this is what gives this Tradition its strength and lasting power.

Madge se sprema za sastanak s drugim vješticama. One pristižu sa svih strana, svaka ima luč i držak metle, svaka svoje omiljeno piće. Plešu u krugu oko vatre, pozdravljaju Madge, i za dobrodošlicu ispijaju po kupu vrućeg napitka koji im je pripremila.
Madge ih poziva k djelu. Neke se vrte, svijaju, i prepliću ružičasto sukno, dok druge plešu i bore se štapovima metli. Čaranje je završeno. Piju za rastanak i jato vještica nestaje u pećinu.
Magla se povukla. Zora ustupa mjesto danu i krajolik sada zatravljuje svojim šumama i planinama. Silfida vodi Jamesa niz strm planinski puteljak, i dok on plašljivo korača, ona kao da nogama jedva dodiruje stijenu. Ovo je njezino carstvo. James samo što se ne razljuti, no tada ona leprša oko njega u najdivnijim pozama. Jamesove kretnje, i bez njegova znanja, sve više poprimaju nadzemaljsku lakoću. On slijedi Silfidu u njezinu laganom letu, i njegov se ples harmonično stapa s njezinim.
Uprkos njegovoj ljubavi prema Silfidi i čarobnoj moći koja ga nezadrživo odvlači k njoj, još uvijek mu se vraća sjećanje na Effy i upozorava ga na nepravdu koju joj je nanio. Još jednom postaje melankoličan i osjeća se iscrpljenim kao od pijanstva.
Silfida opaža njegovo neraspoloženje te mu svojom nevidnom vedrinom nastoji rastjerati crne misli. Ona zna način: sestre će joj pomoći da razvesele njenog dragog. Na njezin znak, one se sve pojavljuju u grmlju, na granama i po stijenama. Mlade silfide s krilima plavim i ružičastim ubrzo će odagnuti mladićevu nevoljkost. Neke se ljuljaju u prozračnim suknima koje su poviješala na stabla, dok druge stoje na vrhu grana i svojom ih težinom svijaju do zemlje, da bi ih dah vjetra ponovo podigao u zrak. Njihovo plesanje i dražesno grupiranje pobuđuje u Jamesu oduševljenje. Više je no ikad obuzet Silfidom, no ona izmiče njegovim zagrljajima, i razočaravši ga nekoliko puta, iščezava baš u trenutku kada ju je htio dohvatiti. Uzaludno ispituje ostale silfide. One mu ne odgovaraju nego odlijeću jedna za drugom. Uznemiren i pogođen bolom, James ne može ostati sam, već pojuri za očaravajućim bićem.

FOCUS ON TUVA: Where ancient shaman traditions are alive in the modern world

A feature of Tuvan shamanism is its age, because it remains the same from ancient times, from the cave men through the great Scythian kingdom and until now. It hasn't changed. I think that Tuvan shamanism is something great, Vedantic shamanism with witchcraft, healing, communication with spirits of mountains, rivers, lakes, taiga, and animals.

We talk to these spirits and rule them, and we understand the human soul very well. Interestingly, in ancient times people cared for each other, did not feel jealous, that's why they all lived to be over 90, until they were tired of living and passed away on their own.

Now there is a lot of noise, angry words, much jealousy, because huge differences in wealth make people compare themselves with others and start feeling envious.

I think that's why people are 'attacked' by diseases.

When we live peacefully, when we don't worry, don't gossip, don't rush, don't say bad things about people, we can live our entire life without any illnesses.

What do people come to us with?

Quite often with in-born diseases such as cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, or perhaps a child starts walking later, falls behind  in terms of development, or suffers epilepsy or sleep-walking. Lately, a lot of adults seek help with cancer - women come with womb cancer and breast cancer. Men come with cirrhosis and prostatitis.

There was no single time when I couldn't help. Once there was a child whose skin looked like fish scales and we fixed it. Man is a child of nature, it is impossible to heal a man without asking for nature's help, and we, shamans, will never harm people.

If a shaman harms someone, he will lose his power. There are people from different countries visiting me, from France, England, Norway. I have recently been to Turkey, where I was elected the highest shaman.

Dolazi altajska šamanica u HR, dobila zilion mailova i poziva, mene ni na trenutak nije dotaklo. Vjerujem kako žena posjeduje znanja koja je proučavala i sve pet, samo me moguće taj pomodarski okvir toliko udaljuje od zanimanja.

  Jučer sam u vlastitom domu pronašla krasne poveće primjerke ametista i narančastog kalcita. Odmah sam kontaktirala poznanicu koja se bavi kristalima i predivne mi je pričice uputila. Sad ih zaljubljeno promatram i čitavo jutro pretražujem linkove koje mi je proslijedila. 
  
  Možemo ih "programirati" da čine nešto na nama (iscjeljivanje, otvaranje čakri, poticanje vizija itd.) ili da nas naprosto čuvaju. No prije svega, potrebno ih je očistiti. Postoje različiti načini za to. Pustiti pet minuta po njima mlaz mlake vode ili nekoliko minuta u moru ili na kiši, ako nije prehladno. Zatim ih treba "napuniti".  I za to postoje različiti načini. Sat vremena na laganom jutarnjem suncu ili na mjesečini (većina se izbjagava puniti na diretnoj sunčevoj svjetlosti), ili na zemlji pored nekog stabla (može i na zemlji sobne biljke).
